THE SEASON OF EPIPHANY
++++++++++++++++++

Fr. PaulAND THE “ANSKAR” IS …?

On February 3, we are called to remember Anskar in our liturgical calendar of holy days. To use the current phrase pervading the Super Bowl hype of the New Orleans Saints, WHO DAT??

Anskar was not a high profile figure in our Christian history, unlike Francis, Benedict of Nursia, Teresa of Avila, and others. Anskar was born in France in 801, educated in a monastic school to which he was called as a teacher and master. However, his deeper call and longing was that of a missionary. So in 826, Anskar responded to a call for a Christian missionary from King Harald of Denmark. Steadfast in his call, Anskar established a school and mission in Denmark, working tirelessly but unsuccessfully to convert the people to the Christian faith.

Undeterred, he expanded his missionary work to Sweden in 829. He continued to work tirelessly, with meager aid from the monastery or the royal families, until he was consecrated Archbishop of Hamburg in 831. Even as Archbishop, the heart of this missionary continued serving the people of Denmark and Sweden for another twenty years. However, the seeds of his work would not bear fruit until over one hundred years later, some eighty years after his death!

What encourages my faith journey is Anskar’s faithfulness as the witness for God and Christ in a most unlikely place, and with conversion that would not be fully realized until long after his death. St. Paul writes to the Corinthians, “What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you came to believe, as the Lord assigned each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” [1 Corinthians 3:5-6]

Epiphany is the manifestation of God’s kingdom come in Jesus. Jesus calls a most unlikely group of people as his disciples and friends, travels the dusty countryside well away from the center of power and prestige, and was followed by crowds who are not quite “our kind of people.” Then it took another thirty years to really get the Christian faith going!

What encourages my faith journey, and I hope that of every “ordinary” person of faith, is we are called to be faithful seed planters and watering cans for God and Christ just as we are, just where we are, in the ordinary of our days. Now that is an “Anskar” I can do something about with my gifts and faith!

In peace always, your servant in Christ,
Paul+
